Swimming Pool and Spa Safety Tips!

During these summer months, more time is spent near and in the water. Here are some key tips we’ve found helpful in sharing with homeowners and clients that keep all members of the community safe during water activities.

Education & Prevention

Learn to identify the signs of drowning.

Establish that all members of your household are well-trained in identifying a drowning situation, pets included. Resources that we often share with our community include connecting homeowners with licensed swim instructors and local organizations, such as the YMCA or American Red Cross,  that provide swimming classes for all ages and levels. If a child, elder or pet is ever missing, check the water first. Verify there is always a trained lifeguard or swimmer available, especially within arms reach of young children.

Pro Tip: New swimmers should wear life preservers until they are fully confident in independent swimming. It is wise to always keep an extra handy.

Pool & Water Care

Stay alert of water imbalance symptoms.

Pool water should be properly balanced to prevent corrosions or scaling. Chemically balancing your pool water certifies it is neutral to bathers and doesn't damage your pool surface or your pool equipment. Ensure to test your pH and Total Alkalinity levels before pool use for an optimal swim environment.

Pro Tip: Designate a water watcher to look for any contaminants in the water before, during and after use.

Pool & Spa Equipment

Examine your operational pool equipment for proper use

Pool equipment includes pumps, filters, heaters and cleaners, and also chemical feeders and salt chlorine generators. These should be regularly checked for the well-being of all who want to enjoy the pool area. Main Drains should also be inspected regularly to ensure they are firmly attached. Never utilize the pool without the main drain cover safely attached.

Pro Tip: Secure your pool and spa with appropriate barriers, such as a pool fence or baby gates, perimeter and motion alarms,  pool and spa covers and the installation of anti-entrapment drain covers.
